The Music Room(Jalsaghar)

  • Dir: Satyajit Ray

  • India, 1958, Bengali, 100mins, DCP, B&W

  • Cast: Chhabi Biswas, Gangapada Bose, Kali Sarkar, Padma Devi

In his chronicle of India’s modernisation, Ray reserved great sympathy for those in society displaced by changes attributed to the forces of history and progress. The Music Room tells the haunting story of a landlord who proudly holds onto his aristocratic heritage when confronted with the philistinism of the nouveau riche after the zamindari system is abolished, obsessively lavishing his wealth on sumptuous concerts of Indian classical music to the neglects of his family and estate. Acclaimed by Werner Herzog, “”It’s of phenomenal beauty and Ray really knew how to use music and create a drama around music.”
