The Noose(Pętla)
Dir: Wojciech Jerzy Has
Poland, 1958, Polish, 101mins, DCP
Cast: Gustaw Holoubek, Aleksandra Śląska, Teresa Szmigielówna
A powerful existential drama of entrapment in time and alcohol, Has’ remarkable feature debut is at once an uncompromisingly dark vision of postwar Poland. His recurrent obsession with the odyssey of characters takes off with Kuba, an artist who struggles with his own weakness against an agonising need to stay sober. Dragging us through loops of phone cords, belts, and jump ropes that conspire to predict his tragic fate, the Polish director fuses expressionist with surrealist touches into a nightmarish experience, where the past entwines with the present, and the subconscious interferes with reality, foreshadowing the complexities of form that define his mastery.
