The Sea Knows
Dir: Kim Ki-young
South Korea, 1961, 117 minsmins, DCP
Cast: Kim Wun-ha, Gong Midori, Lee Sang-sa
Hailed as “a unique film that breaks new ground in Korean cinema”, The Sea Knows solidified Kim’s break with cinematic realism following his widely acclaimed The Housemaid (1960). Among a group of Korean student soldiers receiving military training in Nagoya, Aroun rebels against the harsh treatment and marries a Japanese girl despite everyone’s objections. A large-scale US bombing, however, leaves their blissful life in ruins. Transcending its roots in the standard anti-Japanese WWII genre, the film, in denouncing imperialism, becomes a distinctive examination of humanity, sadism, greed, lust for power and sexuality, under Kim’s eccentric and metaphorical cinematic creation. The existing film is incomplete, portions of the audio and video have been lost. We will screen the digital version with missing dialogue supplemented by subtitles.
