The Silent Holy Stones
Dir: Pema Tseden
2005, Tibetan/Putonghua, 98mins, DCP
Cast: Luosang Danpei, Quesai, Quhuancang Buddha
A landmark in Tibetan cinema, Pema Tseden’s debut feature offers an intimate insider’s look of everyday life of the Tibetan people, whose traditional spirituality becomes infiltrated by economic-boom materialism. Featuring a cast of non-professional actors, this humanistic drama weaves an allegorical web around a seemingly simple story: a Buddhist novice returns home to celebrate the Tibetan New Year, only to be glued to the Chinese television series Journey to the West. Unwittingly, his passion for the unfinished sacred stone left behind by the last engraver is taken over.
