The Song Lantern
Dir: Naruse Mikio
Japan, 1943, 93 minmins, DCP
Cast: Hanayagi Shotaro, Yanagi Eijiro, Yamada Isuzu
In a parable-like story of a conceited young Noh artist who falls into the life of a street singer after shaming an old blind musical rival into suicide, Naruse transformed what might have been a look-alike of Mizoguchi’s The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum (1939) into a poetic dimension outside of time, and otherworldly. Lyrical crane shots gliding through the forest haze evokes a mystical space where the sinner instructs his victim’s daughter, and in the ecstasy of her Noh dance his catharsis is achieved.
