The Sting

  • Dir: George Roy Hill

  • USA, 1973, English, 129mins, DCP

  • Cast: Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Robert Shaw

Following up on the success of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid , Hill reunites with his co-stars to play out the same proven box-office formula more brilliantly, hitting the jackpot of seven Oscars. Newman and Redford are superbly reteamed as a pair of conmen in 1936 Chicago, who are out to fleece a bigtime racketeer to revenge his killing of their friend. Supplementing the incredibly complex plot of multiple deception and surprise ending with extravagant period sets, stylised costumes and elaborate technical devices, this finely-crafted story gives unrelenting efforts to charm, if only because The Sting itself is a kind of con game – that we are all too happy to be conned and fall for the fascinating game.
