The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums

  • Dir: Mizoguchi Kenji

  • Japan, 1939, 142minmins, DCP

  • Cast: Hanayagi Shotaro, Mori Kakuko

Mizoguchi tackles questions of gender and power in the exquisite world of Kabuki, where men play women’s roles on stage but women support these men in life. This tragic tale focuses on Onoue Kikunosuke, an actor rising on the fame and support of his adoptive father, a Kabuki star. In this world of mirrors and rumors, only Otuko, a wet nurse to his brother, tells him the truth. His love for her initially ruins him but her deep support for him allows him to imagine and regain a career.
