The Tales of Hoffmann

  • Dir: Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger

  • UK, 1951, English, 133mins, DCP

  • Cast: Moira Shearer, Robert Helpmann, Robert Rounseville

A kitsch extravaganza of art, music, dance, light and colour, this adaptation of Offenbach’s opera takes the phantasmagoric consummation between theatrical illusion and cinematic wizardry to an unprecedented level. Recounted by Hoffmann, the whimsical tale of jealousy and nostalgia revolves around the ill-fated romance with his goddess – envisaged as a mechanical doll, a predatory courtesan, and an ailing diva. At once dreamlike and macabre, the awe-inspiring tour de force realises Powell’s perfect notion of the ‘composed film’, shot to a pre-recorded score under the baton of Thomas Beecham, which merges seamlessly with the choreography of Frederick Ashton to create the purest visual, sonic and sensual fantasy.
