The Talk of the Town

  • Dir: George Stevens

  • USA, 1942, English, 118mins, DCP

  • Cast: Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, Ronald Colman

Framed for an arson that he didn’t commit, Leopold (Grant) escapes from jail and hides out in the attic of a house owned by former schoolmate, Nora (Arthur). However, the house has been rented to Lightcap (Colman), a no-nonsense law professor, forcing Nora to pass Leopold off as the gardener. This lively Oscar-nominated chamber piece sees two of their era’s top leading men in a romantic triangle so convincing that director George Stevens had to use test screenings to decide which of them would win Nora’s love. However, Leopold and Lightcap’s friendly banters are so fun to watch that it qualifies as one of the greatest film bromances that existed before the term was even invented.
