The Wailing(GOKSEONG)
Dir: Na Hong-jin
South Korea, 2016, Korean, 156mins, DCP
Cast: Kwak Do-won, Hwang Jung-min, Kunimura Jun
Taking fear to the edge of an abyss, Na Hong-jin delivers a supreme evocation of evil through his masterful use of suspense and gore. Erupted with a string of gruesome deaths in a secluded village, the horror epic follows a slow-witted cop, whose daughter is mysteriously afflicted. As he investigates a Japanese vagrant rumoured to possess malevolent powers, he unleashes a greater terror that threatens them all. Weaving together Christian symbolism and ancient shamanistic traditions to evoke an obscure, cryptic atmosphere, Na employs raw, visceral film language to delve into the abysmally dark cave of the Korean psyche, inherently scarred by the violent history of Japanese colonialism, civil war and partition.
