The Weavers
Dir: Friedrich Zelnik
Germany, 1927, 96 minsmins, DCP
Cast: Paul Wegener, Valeska Stock, Hermann Picha
Friedrich Zelnik had made his reputation as a director of light melodramas featuring his wife, Lyn Mara. In taking on this story of Silesian home weavers in 1844, fighting against the oppression of capitalist machines, though, he reached back not only into history but into German literature and consciousness – the incident had inspired Hesse and Marx as well as playwright Gerhart Hauptmann. Zelnik’s powerful drama of men coming to consciousness and releasing their fury also features the only cinematic collaboration of the sardonic artist Georg Grosz, who created the intertitles.
