Theatre of Mr. and Mrs. Kabal

  • Dir: Walerian Borowczyk

  • France, 1967, 77minmins, DCP

Borowczyk’s first and also last feature-length animated film takes a glimpse inside the grotesque world of the theatrical Kabals. Opened with a processed liveaction appearance by the director himself, this strangely moving existential soap opera in surreal fantasy depicts the struggles of diminutive Mr. Kabal against his domineering wife. A mixture of cut-out and drawn animation, added with clippings of old illustrations and photographs, defies conventional narrative to evoke highs and lows of married life. An incredible work of artistic flexibility, craftsmanship and humor that inspires Terry Gilliam’s animation in Monty Python films.
