Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!

  • Dir: Pedro Almodóvar

  • Spain, 1989, 102 minmins, DCP

  • Cast: Victoria Abril, Antonio Banderas, Loles Leon

To know me is to love me. A newly released psych-ward inmate decides to give a former porn star that opportunity. With a tenacious desire to start a family, he breaks into her apartment and keeps her tied up while waiting for her to requite his love. In the usual Almodóvar idiosyncrasies, this twisted romantic fantasy is disturbing yet invigorating with carnivalesque, bright-colored plethora of visual signifiers and connotations. A cinematic sexuality that is almost surreal, could it be a “romantic fairy tale” – just at its most unconventional?
