Truly Human(Et rigtigt menneske)

  • Dir: Åke Sandgren

  • Denmark, 2001, Danish, 90mins, DCP

  • Cast: Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Peter Mygind, Susan Olsen

Evoking Herzog's The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser in Dogme fashion, this bittersweet fantasy shows how innocence is perceived as dark and mischievous in contemporary society. An apparent social criticism with revelations about discrimination, racism and sexual exploitation, yet the fable yields some comic moments throughout the story of P, an imaginary elder brother of a young girl whose accidental death leaves her parents traumatised. Hoping to become truly human, the wide-eyed naivete sets out to fit into a world where everyone only sees the worst of themselves in him. Remaining loyal to the manifesto’s anti-bourgeois spirit, this official Dogme #18 strikes a perfect balance between tragedy and humour.
