Excelling as a duo in their artistic pursuit, a shamisen player and a ballad singer conceal their affection for each other, letting pride and small arguments lead to separate ways. Naruse’s variation of the 1934 Hollywood classic Bolero, shimmering light on the great Yamada Isuzu and Hasegawa Kazuo who radiate in their magnificent performances immersed in deep emotions, though gloomed by a sacrifice ending that leaves lingering sorrow to this melodramatic love story.
