Two Women(La ciociara)

  • Dir: Vittorio De Sica

  • Italy/France, 1960, Italian, 101mins, DCP

  • Cast: Sophia Loren, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Raf Vallone, Eleonora Brown

Vittorio De Sica’s neorealist tale of survival is set in war-torn Italy, where a young widow and her pubescent daughter flee the Allied bombing raids on Rome, only for the dangers to follow them into the countryside. Soldiers and sympathisers from both sides continue to surround the two women, staking their claim on their hearts, souls and flesh. Originally cast as the daughter, Loren and her producer-husband Carlo Ponti campaigned for the then 25-year-old actress to play the more mature role. The gamble paid off handsomely, with Loren becoming the first to win an Academy Award for a non-English speaking performance.
