Ulysses’ Gaze(To vlemma tou Odyssea)
Dir: Theo Angelopoulos
Greece/France/Italy/Germany, 1995, Greek/English, 175mins, 35mm
Cast: Harvey Keitel, Maia Morgenstern, Erland Josephson
In a modern odyssey across the Balkans, Angelopoulos condenses in the character of Harvey Keitel, a Greek-American filmmaker simply known as “A”, as he returns to his hometown to track down three missing reels of early film footage. Gazing into the heart of darkness through the war-torn landscape, he looks for redemption in a world where toppled monumental figure is carried down the river. Moving fluidly between shattered reality, spectral memories and broken dreams, this epic voyage is simultaneously a meditation on the genesis of cinema, an exploration of changing borders, and a man’s metaphysical search of his own soul. Screening with short film Athens (2’) from Lumiére and Company (1995).
