From an impoverished beginning through a series of calamities befalling along her way, the unrefined yet fearless Oshima (in a superbly dynamic performance by Takamine Hideko) is relentless in her search of happiness. Running away from an arranged wedding and whaling away two worthless, cheating husbands, she yet maintains a tender heart for the gentle inn owner, a married man (Mori Masayuki), however, trapped in his own circumstances. A rare Naruse film set in the Taisho period, Takamine’s personal journey is a microcosm of the struggles of the time and, a defiance against destiny.
