Vladimir and Rosa(VLADIMIR ET ROSA)

  • Dir: Dziga Vertov Group ( Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Gorin)

  • France/Germany, 1971, French, 96mins, DCP

  • Cast: Yves Afonso, Juliet Berto, Anne Wiazemsky

Taking its title from Vladimir Lenin and Rosa Luxemburg, this free interpretation of the Chicago Eight trial from the Dziga Vertov Group is another witty, strangely engaging and antagonistic film that is also wickedly funny. Godard and Gorin stage the trial as a parody and a symbolic conflict between representatives of various left-wing factions on one side, and the bourgeois establishment on the other. Apart from the unjust nature of the trial, they were equally concerned with the narrative and mise-en-scene of the film as an ideological tool for understanding the political subtext.
