Wait and See(AH HARU)
Dir: Somai Shinji
Japan, 1998, Japanese, 100mins, 35mm
Cast: Sato Koichi, Saito Yuki, Yamazaki Tsutomu
Gently spinning the traditional Japanese shomin-geki, Somai infuses funny and chickenish moments into mischief in an unconventional family drama. A well-off investment adviser's life is turned upside down when his estranged father suddenly arrives on his doorstep. Eccentric and unruly, the unwelcome guest unwittingly cracks open the hidden conflicts of the seemingly happy but incredibly dull family. Bookended with rituals of mourning, the film casts a sensitive but playful take on blood ties and fatherhood, exploring salaryman anxieties and family tensions surrounding the looming financial crisis. It’s bleak yet ultimately uplifting – spring will always return; just wait and see.
