Walkover(Walkower)

  • Dir: Jerzy Skolimowski

  • Poland, 1965, Polish, 75mins, DCP

  • Cast: Jerzy Skolimowski, Aleksandra Zawieruszanka, Andrzej Herder

In this loose sequel to Identification Marks: None, Skolimowski’s alter ego, Andrzej Leszczyc, returns as a man about to turn thirty, who hustles his way into amateur boxing tournaments that give him something concrete to fight for – rather than abiding by the bureaucratic codes at the staterun energy plant as his college girlfriend. Directing a critique against post-Stalinist industrial expansion and a ‘fight-back’ against artistic conformity with only 29 shots in the whole film, Walkover displays a form of originality that reflects Skolimowski’s personal experience as a boxer and a poet, his aesthetic audacity and craftsmanship, with a jazzy vibe that won critical acclaim from Godard.
