Where the Green Ants Dream
Dir: Werner Herzog
West Germany, 1984, 100minmins, DCP
In the godforsaken stretch of Australian Outback, the Aborigines believe it’s where the green ants go to dream. To prevent a mining company from destroying their sacred sites, they stage a sit-down strike. Failed in court, the Aborigines take off in an airplane, flying in oblivion. Nothing in the narrative is based on anthropological fact, yet there is a Herzogian’s “reality” in this odd film – an elliptical, mystically infused tale of a confrontation between ancient spirituality and modern civilization, with a deep respect to the people who struggle to keep their visions alive.
