Wild at Heart
Dir: David Lynch
USA, 1990, English, 124mins, DCP
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Laura Dern, Willem Dafoe, Isabella Rossellini
A violent and erotically charged road movie with allusions to The Wizard of Oz , Lynch’s loose adaptation of Barry Gifford’s pulp novel follows a pair of young lovers, Sailor and Lula, as they flee the murderous wrath of her mother and a volley of hired guns. Forgoing realism in favour of a hedonistic Southernfried fantasy, fuelled by adolescent yearning and cartoonish villainy, the film was widely booed upon winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Like many of Lynch’s works, however, this endlessly hip and stylish romance has since found an infatuated, snakeskin jacket-sporting fanbase to ride shotgun into the sunset.
