Wind From the East(LE VENT D’EST)
Dir: Dziga Vertov Group (Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Gorin)
France/West Germany/Italy, 1970, French, 93mins, DCP
Cast: Gian Maria Volonté, Anne Wiazemsky, Cristiana Tullio-Altan
A bold and fascinating study of class struggle as well as an approach to filmmaking that is at once primitive and challenging. Godard uses lyrical and symbolic images related only tangentially to the conflict in the soundtrack, where a workers’ strike is going on, and methodically analyses the various components of the situation, including workers, students, union delegates, middlemen and the police. Playful references and absurd situations allow all these forces a voice on the film’s verbose soundtrack, at the same time jokingly deconstruct and rethink the mise-en-scene and possibilities of cinema.
