In an Oscar-worthy superb performance, Adrien Brody plays a Hungarian architect and Holocaust survivor who comes to the US in poverty, and then begins a distinguished yet daunting career under the patronage of a power-hungry industrialist. A historical reckoning through an immigrant’s postwar experience, it reflects on a series of vivid contradictions from utopia to barbarism, and the promise and perils of modernity.
