A River Called Titas is a deeply emotional depiction of memory, loss, and a vanishing fishing community in East Bengal. Returning to his lost homeland in 1972 in the newly independent Bangladesh being born after winning a genocidal war, Ghatak adapted Dalit writer-journalist Advaita Mallabarman’s landmark novel into an epic portrait of lives bound to the dying River Titas, revealing the intimate interdependence between people, place and the ecosystems that sustain them. The film strikingly foreshadows Anthropocene concerns, connecting ecological fragility with social and economic precarity. Woven through with personal tragedy and collective loss, Titas becomes a haunting testament to human survival amid environmental crisis.
