Blow Out

  • Dir: Brian De Palma

  • USA, 1981, 107minmins

  • Cast: John Travolta, Nancy Allen, John Lithgow

John Travolta is a movie sound-effects man who unintentionally records an auto accident in which a prominent politician is killed. It soon becomes clear that the accident was in fact an assassination, followed by a cover up and a plot to bump off a key witness: the politician’s mistress. De Palma is strongly influenced by Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up (1966), even down to the similarities in titles, and he includes references to Hitchcock’s Psycho and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation (1974), as well as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, his brother Ted’s infamous Chappaquiddick incident, and the Watergate scandal. The film is a perfect blend of high suspense and gallows humor.
