Summoning forth another of Eastwood’s dark, masterly investigations of the implacability of evil and the difficulty of justice, this moving and true story in late 1920s Los Angeles stars Angeline Jolie as a traumatised single mother who insists that the son returned to her by police following his kidnap is not hers. Structured not as a thriller but as an uncoiling of outrage with restrained clarity, the story of her struggle against police corruption and repressive systems becomes a feverish and bluntly effective parable of wronged innocence and unaccountable power. A quiet triumph for an unsung heroine from American history, and Eastwood for his gutsy storytelling.
