Dirty Harry is back, in a way, as a foulmouthed bigot harbouring racist views, resenting the world of lost values with a squint, and keeping his shotgun ready to lock and load. A canny manipulator of his own iconic presence, Eastwood plays his hero for one last time with grandstanding gusto, pulling off the essentially comic combination of elderly mannerisms and cowboy menace. The political becomes personal, as the grumpy war veteran’s protective instincts ignite when a shy, bookish teenage Hmong boy living next door is bullied by a thuggish gang. Defying convention, this macho melodrama etches its most poignant epitaph on violence and vengeance.
