The first film of Partition Trilogy and the most celebrated of Ghatak’s works, it is the only commercially successful film during his lifetime. Set against a refugee family uprooted by Indian Partition, it follows breadwinner Nita, whose quiet sacrifices sustain others while gradually consuming her own being. Ghatak started experimenting with multilayered narrative and the Great Mother archetype with Nita embodying the suffering and resilience of a fractured nation.
