The Cloud-Capped Star(Meghe Dhaka Tara)
Dir: Ritwik Ghatak
India, 1960, Bengali, 127mins, DCP
Cast: Supriya Choudhury, Anil Chatterjee, Bijon Bhattacharya, Gita Dey
The first film of Partition Trilogy and the most celebrated of Ghatak’s works, it is the only commercially successful film during his lifetime. Set against a refugee family uprooted by Indian Partition, it follows breadwinner Nita, whose quiet sacrifices sustain others while gradually consuming her own being. Ghatak started experimenting with multilayered narrative and the Great Mother archetype with Nita embodying the suffering and resilience of a fractured nation. Potentising melodrama with radical innovations in sound, image and mythology, he transforms personal tragedy into a haunting reflection on Partition's enduring wounds, trauma of displacement and social injustice with extraordinary emotional power and timeless resonance.
