The Golden Line(Subarnarekha)
Dir: Ritwik Ghatak
India, 1965, Bengali, 129mins, DCP
Cast: Abhi Bhattacharya, Madhabi Mukherjee, Satindra Bhattacharya, Bijon Bhattacharya
The final film of Partition Trilogy is an epic tale of human kindness, trauma of separation, and fragile new beginnings. A refugee, his sister and an orphan resettle near the industrial landscape of the Subarnarekha River, seeking to rebuild their lives after Partition. As years of struggle, displacement and social prejudice erode their hopes, personal histories become entangled with the failures of a nation struggling to define itself. Moving between the intimate and the epic, Ghatak combines melodrama, myth, memory and political allegory to create a haunting portrait of lives fractured by history and social inequality. Both devastating and deeply humane, The Golden Line exposes the enduring scars of Partition while searching for the possibility of renewal.
