The Oldest Profession: Anticipation

  • Dir: Jean-Luc Godard

  • France/West Germany/Italy, 1967, French, 20mins, DCP, Category III

  • Cast: Marilu Tolo, Anna Karina, Jacques Charrier

Godard’s final collaboration with Karina is in this European anthology, as six major directors (all male) consider the comic possibilities of prostitution through the ages, from prehistoric times, to nineteenth century Paris, and an imagined future. Godard took on the last, futuristic segment when an offworld male chooses between two highly-programmed but different prostitutes while in a spaceport hotel. An engaging black & white sketch that resonates with Alphaville and his other serious works of the decade. Screening with Made in U.S.A.
