The Runaway(Bari Theke Paliye)

  • Dir: Ritwik Ghatak

  • India, 1959, Bengali, 120mins, DCP

  • Cast: Parambhattarak Lahiri, Gyanesh Mukherjee, Padma Devi, Kali Banerjee

The Runaway is a story of a young boy who runs away from his rural home in search of freedom, excitement and adventure in Kolkata. Seen through his hopeful yet increasingly disillusioned eyes, the city becomes a place of wonder, humour and harsh social realities. Blending warmth with subtle social critique, Ghatak captures the textures, inequalities and contradictions of the metropolis in post-Independent India while offering a deeply compassionate portrait of youthful curiosity and resilience. Released in the same year as Truffaut's The 400 Blows, The Runaway shares its sensitivity to childhood rebellion and vulnerability, yet remained largely undiscovered for decades despite its remarkable artistry, cinematic innovation and emotional power.
