The Travelling Players(O Thiasos)
Dir: Theo Angelopoulos
Greece, 1975, Greek, 231mins, DCP
Cast: Eva Kotamanidou, Aliki Georgouli, Stratos Pachis
An epic vision of the tumultuous landscape of Greek history is traced through the personal histories of a troupe of actors, whose pastoral play Golfo the Shepherdess is continuously interrupted by the politics of the time. Re-enacting the fates of the major figures in Aeschylus’ Oresteia , the travelling performers are caught in struggle, betrayal and tragic death amidst the swirling vortices of military junta, World War II and the aftermath of the Civil War. An indisputable landmark in cinema, this analogy for all Greek people as displaced exiles is an ensemble of Angelopoulos' profound long-take and moving camera mise-en-scene taken to harrowingly beautiful extremes.
