The Trial

  • Dir: Orson Welles

  • France / Italy / West Germany, 1962, 119minmins, DCP

  • Cast: Anthony Perkins, Jeanne Moreau, Orson Welles, Romy Schneider

Also questioning the system and the establishment, the case and the accused take different forms here: Welles’s penchant for baroque visuals – along with his affinity for the paranoid, claustrophobic world of film noir – make his bravura adaptation of Kafka’s novel a vividly nightmarish experience. Shot with characteristic ingenuity, the film makes splendid use of existing architecture in and around Paris, most notably the vast Gare d’Orsay, while Welles co-stars and dubbed with his own voice a dozen of the film’s minor characters. Anthony Perkins plays Josef K., supported by seductive European actresses Jeanne Moreau and Romy Schneider, in what Welles considered his finest work.
