The sombre story of a solitary man who discovers the pain of loneliness when he loses the love of his life, Murakami’s melancholic short story is brilliantly adapted with a perfect balance of fidelity and originality by Ichikawa Jun. The late director’s creative use of compositions and camera movement give viewers the feeling of reading a moving novel, while the wistful narration by Nishijima Hidetoshi (who would coincidentally star in Hamaguchi Ryusuke's adaptation of Murakami's Drive My Car) and the beautifully pensive score by Sakamoto Ryuichi perfectly convey the calmly sorrowful tone of Murakami’s original prose. Screening with Attack on a Bakery and A Girl, She is 100 Percent.
