Wife

  • Dir: Naruse Mikio

  • Japan, 1953, 96 minmins, DCP

  • Cast: Uehara Ken, Takamine Mieko, Tanami Yatsuko

Adapted from the same Hayashi Fumiko’s novel as Repast , Naruse plays with the pleasures of fiction, adding conspicuous comic touches while ripping off the sugarcoat of reality. In a bleak story of an unhappy marriage as mundane routine becomes marital strife due to the husband’s affair, Naruse dials up the intractable aspects of the relationship, weaving many side characters into the drama to mirror the couple’s woe and forlorn. Dueling husband-wife voiceovers in the opening resonate at the end – nothing changes, yet everything has changed.
